Story Out Of Sequence part nine

A Detective walks across the office to his desk with an amused look on his face and a folder in his hands. He weaves his way through the mess of work stations and file cabinets piled high with paperwork, paper cups and coffee makers. Upon arriving he looks across at his partner who is busily typing in a report on her computer. “Hey Sam, you’re gonna love this one.”

She snaps her head towards him quickly. “Dammit Murphy what did you sign us up for this time? We’re already piled under with cases to work on here.”

“Oh I didn’t request this shit trust me on that one.” The folder drops onto his desk blowing an empty cigarette pack into the floor, “It was given to me by the chief himself. Seems he likes to see us suffer.”

“What the hell could be worse than what we have now?”

“Grave robbery.”

“You have got to be kidding. Grave robbing? Ah hell what did somebody break into a mausoleum across town or something.”

“Nothing that simple. Somebody dug six feet down into the ground and took an entire fucking casket, body inside and all. But that’s not the best part.”

“How can that get any better?”

“The stolen body was that of Roscoe Harland, the serial killer that we stumbled upon after he got himself shot to doll rags.” Murphy reaches into his jacket and pulls out an unopened pack of cigarettes and begins slapping it against his hand. “Since the feds got to take that headache off of our hands back then the chief thinks it’s funny to make us track him down now.”

“Just great. So do we have anything to go off of? I’m assuming one of the guys was on the case last night and did something.”

“Footprints, at least five different sizes, evidently had bags over their boots to mask the details and to keep the mud off. No witnesses, no surveillance cameras anywhere nearby, no reports of anything at all in that area all night until an officer doing a drive through of the area spotted the pile of dirt. It was Stoelting on the case when it got called in and he’s pretty thorough on getting the details down so we have photos, measurements, everything.”

“Well we might as well head down and take a look for ourselves just in case. Just the way I wanted to start my morning. We need to get a list of the various victims’ families in case one of them decided to do this.”

“Already have one of the guys pulling the file on it.” He opened up the pack as she put her jacket on and grabbed the sunglasses off the desk. “Although with the speed it was done and the number of people there it sounds more professional.”

“Yeah I know but we might as well cover everything as soon as possible. Give me one of those by the way this day is going I’m going to need to buy a pack myself.”

“Well at least the weather is going to hold out until tonight and we can go over the scene a bit better.”

“Damn you are digging for silver lining now Murphy.”

“I have to. I can’t drink while I’m on duty remember? Plus it’s not like you are going to point out anything positive this early in the morning.”
